Our Alopecia story began in 2025 when our 14 year old son began losing all of his hair. It went from a few small bald patches on his head to complete hair loss on his body within a few months. To say we were shocked and heartbroken is the understatement of a lifetime. Up until that point, our son had hardly ever been sick, and was going through puberty (facial/body hair, getting tall, and muscles getting bigger). His life (and ours) seemed to change overnight. We took him to a dermatologist when 2-3 bald patches turned into 7-8 spots. After receiving corticosteroid injections, and eventually put on Prednisone, his hair loss went from bad to worse within a few days. His hair was falling out in chunks every day. We were told by the dermatologist that the “sped up” hair loss had nothing to do with the recent steroids. I’m still skepital about that to this day, but have no proof.
After being told by the dermatologist that the only option was to put our son on very expensive Jak-inhibitors for the rest of his life (that our insurance wouldn’t cover), we decided to look into alternative/functional medicine solutions. We wanted to find the root cause of our son’s hair loss. We refuse to believe that we lost the “genetics” game, and he will have this the rest of his life.
We are still on this journey and will gladly share it with others. We have learned a lot about options of what to do and what not to do. Our eyes have been opened regarding conventional medicine vs. functinal medicine. One phillosophy keeps you medicated, and one tries to bring restoration to the body.
